Game modes - 2024

For all age groups:

For every team the tournament begins with qualifying games against all other teams in the same group. This will be followed by the final round and placement rounds. In the final round, the two best-placed teams of a group go on to play on a K.O.-basis to become the winner of the tournament. In the placement round, the other teams of a group go on to play for the remaining ranks, either in further groups or on a K.O.-basis.

Senior Women (wSen) – 42 Teams

1) qualifying games:    

14 groups of 3 teams (group 1 to 14).

2a) final round:            

  • The 10 first-ranked teams of groups 2 to 6 and 9 to 13 as well as the 14 second-ranked teams play on a K.O.-basis (Q 1-16) for participation in the round of sixteen.
  • The 4 first-ranked teams of groups 1, 7, 8, 14 and the winners of the K.O-games (Q 1-16) go on to play on a K.O.-basis (round of sixteen, quarter finals, semifinals, final). They play for ranks 1 to 16.
  • The losers of the K.O.-games (Q 1-16) go on to play against each other in four groups (groups A to D).
  •  The 4 first-ranked teams of a group (A to D) go on to play for ranks 17 to 20 on a K.O.-basis.
  • The 4 second-ranked teams of a group (A to D) go on to play for ranks 21 to 24 on a K.O.-basis.
  • The 4 third-ranked teams of a group (A to D) go on to play for ranks 25 to 28 on a K.O.-basis.

2b) placement round:   

  • The 12 third-ranked teams of groups 1 to 3, 5 to 10 and 12 to 14 play a K.O.-game (Q29-36) for participation in the games for ranks 29 to 36.
  • The 2 third-ranked teams of groups 4, 11, and the winners of the K.O-games (Q 29-36) go on to play for ranks 29 to 36 on a K.O.-basis.
  • The losers of the K.O.-games (Q 29-36) go on to play against each other in two groups (groups E to F).
  • The two first-ranked teams of the new groups (E and F) play against each other for rank 37.
  • The two second-ranked teams of the new groups (E and F) play against each other for rank 39.
  • The two third-ranked teams of the new groups (E and F) play against each other for rank 41.
     

Senior Male (mSen) – 36 Teams

1) qualifying games:    

12 groups of 3 teams (group 1 to 12).

2a) final round:            

  • The 4 first-ranked teams of groups 1, 6, 7 and 12 as well as the 12 second-ranked teams play on a K.O.-basis (Q 1-16) for participation in the round of sixteen.
  • The 8 first-ranked teams of groups 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 and 11 and the winners of the K.O-games (Q 1-16) go on to play on a K.O.-basis (round of sixteen, quarter finals, semifinals, final). They play for ranks 1 to 16.
  • The losers of the K.O.-games (Q 1-16) go on to play for ranks 17 to 24 on a K.O.-basis.

2b) placement round:   

  • The 12 third-ranked teams will play against each other in 4 new groups (group A, B, C and D).
  • The 4 first-ranked teams of a group (A to D) go on to play for ranks 25 to 28 on a K.O.-basis.
  • The 4 second-ranked teams of a group (A to D) go on to play for ranks 29 to 32 on a K.O.-basis.
  • The 4 third-ranked teams of a group (A to D) go on to play for ranks 33 to 36 on a K.O.-basis.
     

Male under 14 (mU14) – 28 Teams

1) qualifying games:    

4 groups of 4 teams (group 1, 3, 5 and 7) and 4 groups of 3 teams (group 2, 4, 6 and 8).

2a) final round:            

  • The 8 first-ranked teams of a group will play in the round of sixteen against the second-ranked of another group for participation in the quarter finals.
  • The winners of the round of sixteen go on to play on a K.O.-basis (quarter finals, semifinals, final). They play for ranks 1 to 8.
  • The losers of the round of sixteen will go on to play for ranks 9 to 16 on a K.O.-basis.

2b) placement round:   

  • The 8 third-ranked teams and the 4 fourth-ranked teams go on to play against each other in 4 new groups (groups A to D).
  •  The 4 first-ranked teams of a group (A to D) go on to play for ranks 17 to 20 on a K.O.-basis.
  • The 4 second-ranked teams of a group (A to D) go on to play for ranks 21 to 24 on a K.O.-basis.
  •  The 4 third-ranked teams of a group (A to D) go on to play for ranks 25 to 28 on a K.O.-basis.
     

Male under 16 (mU16) – 26 Teams

1) qualifying games:    

2 groups of 4 teams (group 1 and 8) and 6 groups of 3 teams (group 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7).

2a) final round:            

  • The 8 first-ranked teams of a group will play in the round of sixteen against the second-ranked of another group for participation in the quarter finals.
  • The winners of the round of sixteen go on to play on a K.O.-basis (quarter finals, semifinals, final). They play for ranks 1 to 8.
  • The losers of the round of sixteen will go on to play for ranks 9 to 16 on a K.O.-basis.

2b) placement round:   

  • The third-ranked and fourth-ranked teams play in two groups against each other. Teams of groups 1, 5, 6 and 7 in group A and teams of groups 2, 3, 4, and 8 in group B. Results of the previous group 1 and 8 are transferred into the new groups and those games are not played again.
  • The two first-ranked teams of the new groups (A and B) play against each other for rank 17. The two second-ranked teams of the new groups (A and B) play against each other for rank 19.
  • The two third-ranked teams of the new groups (A and B) play against each other for rank 21.The two fourth-ranked teams of the new groups (A and B) play against each other for rank 23. The two fifth-ranked teams of the new groups (A and B) play against each other for rank 25.
     

Female under 14 (wU14) – 20 Teams

1) qualifying games:    

4 groups of 5 teams (group 1 to 4).

2a) final round:            

  • The 4 first-ranked teams will play against the 4 second-ranked teams on a K.O.-basis (quarter finals) for participation in the semi-final.
  • The winners of the quarter finals go on to play on a K.O.-basis (semifinals, final). They play for ranks 1 to 4.
  • The losers of the quarter finals will go on to play for ranks 5 to 8 on a K.O.-basis.

2b) placement round:   

  • The 4 third-ranked teams of a group will play for ranks 9 to 12 on a K.O.-basis.
  • The 4 fourth-ranked teams of a group will play for ranks 13 to 16 on a K.O.-basis.
  • The 4 fourth-ranked teams of a group will play for ranks 17 to 20 on a K.O.-basis.
     

Male under 12 (mU12), Male under 18 (mU18), mixed Seniors (xSen) – 16 Teams

1) qualifying games:    

4 groups of 4 teams (group 1 to 4).

2a) final round:            

  • The 4 first-ranked teams will play against the 4 second-ranked teams on a K.O.-basis (quarter finals) for participation in the semi-final.
  • The winners of the quarter finals go on to play on a K.O.-basis (semifinals, final). They play for ranks 1 to 4.
  • The losers of the quarter finals will go on to play for ranks 5 to 8 on a K.O.-basis.

2b) placement round:   

  • The 4 third-ranked teams play against the 4 fourth-ranked teams on a K.O.-basis (quarter finals 9-16)
  • The winners of the quarter finals 9-16 will go on to play on a K.O.-basis for ranks 9 to 12.
  • The losers of the quarter finals 9-16 will go on to play for ranks 13 to 16 on a K.O.-basis.
     

Female under 12 (wU12), Female under 16 (wU16), Female under 18 (wU18) – 14 Teams

1) qualifying games:    

2 groups of 4 teams (group 1 and 3) and 2 groups of 3 teams (group 2 and 4).

2a) final round:            

  • 2a) The 1st and 2nd placed teams from groups 1 and 4 will play each other in a four-team group A. The 1st and 2nd placed teams from groups 2 and 3 will play in a four-team group B. The results of the direct duels from the first group phase will be carried over. The 1st and 2nd placed teams from groups A and B will continue to play in the k.o. system (semifinals, final) for places 1 to 4.
  •   The 3rd and 4th placed teams in groups A and B will continue to play for places 5 to 8 in the k.o. system.

2b) placement round:   

  • The 3rd and 4th placed teams from groups 1, 2, 3 and 4 will play out the remaining rankings in a group, with results from direct duels from the first group phase being carried over.
     

Male under 22 (mU22) – 10 Teams

1) qualifying games:   

2 groups of 5 teams (group 1 and 2).

2a) final round:            

  • The 2 first-ranked teams will play against the 2 second-ranked teams on a K.O.-basis (semi-finals) for participation in the final.
  •  The winners of the semifinals play against each other in the final.
  • The losers of the semifinals play against each other for rank 3.

2b) placement round:   

  • The 2 third-ranked teams, the 2 fourth-ranked teams and the 2 fifth-ranked teams play in one group against each other. Results of direct matches of the first group phase are transferred.
